New Year New Groups

We are already in February and classes have started in earnest. This year I am paying more attention to theories and research on educational technology. Best practices in the use of video, focussing on outcomes and interaction are some of the issues I am addressing. Keeping on top of it is necessary. I am looking forward to hearing what students have to say about the three I's framework!

  1. Interesting course... plenty work. it requires me to become very focussed. so much to do in so little time. I am understanding more and more how my students feel. the three I framewor can be utilized as an approach to blended learning. a lots depend on the accessibility of the resources.

  2. I enjoy this session because it simulate discussion and generate relevance to real life situation. Image – how can you get their attention? Interaction – encourage interacting teaching. Integration – allow creative in the student learning styles. Technology, got to love it so make it work for you

  3. With the right mind set we can all arrive at a place where the efficient use of Education Technology in our teaching becomes natural to us. I believe that with every additional class we prepare for, the resocialisation of our selves (as teachers) as well as our students is advanced. Over time we willl all arrive at a place where the benefits derived as a consequence of our perseverence will have vindicated us.

  5. It is interesting that the 3I's build on each other (i.e. image + interaction + integration), exhibit different loci of control and pedagogic perspectives.
I truly appreciate the course's focus on the theory associated with use of educational technology - this is something that is lacking in my own practice and it is difficult to distill out the key/influential concepts without discussion and guidance.

  6. I am making a more conscious effort to integrate media and video in my teaching. One hurdle was realizing that when I downloaded videos from YouTube that I needed to convert it to Windows Media form rather than leave it in RealPlayer from as it would not play. Then it dawned on me that my colleagues never played video for the students as the school's computer didn’t have the compatible program(s). I also couldn’t show the video directly from the internet as there wasn’t any connection. A reality that our classrooms are not quite ‘educational technology’ ready and there doesn’t seem to be a plan to move in that direction quickly.
The three Is framework allows for the image, interaction and integration of appropriate media and helps to keep the focus. I am wondering if it should be in the order of image, integration and then interaction. I did expose my students to a video in one session only to realize again that the volume output from the laptop was inadequate. At later session was able to plug in an external speaker..so I am problem solving.
The advantage of having poor audio was that I was able to voice over the video and guide the students to key points and further expand on their observations (reflections). Of course one student accustomed to the cinema scenario remarked that he could not hear the audio of the video and that he wanted his money back. This highlighted to me the need to educate our students not only in content but in the process of learning and especially in the value of technology in teaching.

  7. Now that my class/module has gone from start up to full swing to wind down, I can truly say that I appreciate being part of this blended course. Our students are complaining about the class start times (4pm) but lecturers maintain that contact and credits go hand in hand and students are in attentive past 730pm. I would need to convince or demonstrate to my peers that a blended learning approach may be a win-win situation.
I hope to introduce podcasts and screen cast in next semester so students can review and access work when it is convenient to them and there is less reliance on face to face interactions
