REVELATIONS

The value of face-to-face interaction with regard to certain topics was reinforced for me after reviewing some of the storyboard submissions. I had worked with the feeling that there is a better understanding of what is required when its discussed face to face and everyone can benefit from drafts presented or shared. This seemed to be the case with at least one group so far. I also feel very strongly that persons should be allowed to use their creativity and present the storyboard in a format that they are comfortable with. For example, if you are a graphic person, then by all means use that format. I look forward to seeing the submissions of the second group.

  1. I stongly agree with the fact that the face to face forum on storyboarding was needed to consolidate, modify and aid understanding on this topic.
Having an assigment whereby a sample storyboarding on certain Lo"s being brought on the face to face meeting, made sure we understood what was expected of us.
The educator having forsight of the difficulties of her learners was very articulate and kind in giving this assigment.
Once again as there are various types of learners ( personalities and so are there educators thus influencing their storyboarding and eductional delivery.
This emphasis the fact that we NEED some face to face for our teaching sessions.

  2. Having the face-to- face session was indeed important. To be honest having had to miss a couple sessions or leave early because of other duties, the information placed online although offered some guidance 'did not fill the gaps' I think without face-to- face sessions I'd feel absolutely lost. I do not know if that is due to the constant personal contact that dentistry facilitates, but adapting to the blending learning may take some getting used to. The storyboard discussions were indeed helpful and I hope I can show good representation of this

  3. You are right that face-to-face Session is always much more effective in enforcing the concept. The face-to-face session gives a chance to interact with the instructor to clarify the doubts and the learner is always benefited from that. This was the case when we discussed during the session on storyboard for our courses. Further this was again came up during our discussion on online and this blended approach was very interesting which further improved the concept for developing the storyboard for the particular course. However, l four always feel that the face to face learning is, regardless of its disadvantages, more effective mode of leaching and learning.ARIND KUMAR.

  4. In our attempts at creating the "best" educational /digitally/media based paradigm of teaching and learning for our students we must be careful that we are not putting the cart before the horse. If we are "institutionalizing" the methods of teaching and learning, then it stands to reason that the engine room behind the administration of such detailed tech learning, should be enhanced. The departments responsible for teaching therefore must fall broadly on a teams shoulders and not one individual who has a million other responsibilities. This human resource engine room (The teaching unit) must be significantly enhanced in terms of numbers enhanced in such a way where we effectively deal with this paradigm shift in teaching. I am always one to welcome good. But I am not sure that all this wiki and blog and digital video in classroom that our students are going to be better students and more capable in their field. Much effort must be spent on motivating students to be motivated. Students have many many more distractions as compared to in our day and it easy for them to go astray.
Sometimes I wish personally that I had my 9 teachers of dentistry teach me under a coconut tree on a beach! i would have gotten maximum from them. The power of the spoken word together with the subliminal affective communication. It is because universities want more and more and more students that they have considered mass media communication moving away from conversation and the affective. We may be producing mutes in the long run. Be careful world of education. Kevin Moze

    1. Some strong words of caution by Kevin. There is no doubt there is great value in the blended approach to teaching and learning and considering the multimedia environment the world is education must embrace the inclusion of information technology media. As I think about this, I think one of the benefits of the use, is to allow for effective course management. Certainly, the initial stages of implementation requires considerable time, effort and dedication to ensuring quality but the methodical, planned and deliberate inclusing over time can allow for effective implemenation....its a process. I don't think that the actual use of the technology ensures student learning but it is the "how' and "for what" which may lead to learning. The varied online tools allow us to be able to interact with students in ways we have not been able to before.

The issue raised that I believe is a limitation is that of institutionalized technology and infrastructural support. It may mean that since the teacher has to learn how to input and use these various teachnologies that the teacher may loose focus of core teaching...(I know that may be contradictory). Since the inclusion of technology in teaching requires considerable dedication of time it poses a tremendous problem since another core function of an academic is to engage in research. My philosophy is that if my research suffers my teaching suffers since I believe that research ideas and output must be integrated into teachning and learning....the basis of higher level education.

Before I started working on the storyboard assignment I thought that I would use the visual type since thats what I'm more comfortable with but considering the constraints presented because that requires more time, I abandoned that approach.

Overall, I embrace the blended learning approach but in order to effectively integrate into my teaching and measure its effectiveness (which is very critical), I will have to do it in small stages over time.

  5. I think the biggest part of the face to face that worked for me was the sample of a completed storyboard. I agree that persons should not be limited to a particular. I think a quick video showing completed storyboards of various kinds would have helped with the online reading material.

  6. I certainly agree that the face to face session clarified the concept of storyboard development when considering a blended or totally online devlivery of a course.Prior to the session the entire idea was lost on me.I have to agree with Reiza that the sample storyboards provided the most tangible information on how to go about completing the assignment

  7. For the storyboard assignment, I remember quite a few people saying that they made a special effort to attend the class so that they could get a better idea of what the storyboard was really about. Despite the provision of samples there seemed to be some confusion on the matter. I think this was the first assignment that gave the opportunity for graphical creativity and I definitely had that part of my brain switched off for months and months. So I was slightly 'disoriented' when the idea of doing something with graphics that could be by hand or by some new software or anything else. I opted for a text only storyboard because I could wrap my mind around it better.
