The Skype Meeting that almost happened?

We had a perfect example of how technology can work and fail. We had our skype meeting last night ( well some people did) I had a series of unfortunate events and was on intermittently for about 20 mins in total. The group rallied and some persons like Jairo, AnnMaire, Sree, Sharon,Shirene, PAN ( yes Faheem I read the chat history) seemed to have a great conversation going. Others were added late and missed out like Allan, Jaya, Chanelle, Kadijah, Dr. Keisha. My internet access was interrupted so I had a crazy time at home until I eventually found a Blink on the go and got back on ( close to 11 pm) ..anyway..more on that later.

  1. I seem to have been very visibly absent on the skype discussion. My most sincere apologies. I too read the history and yes—looks like I missed out on a rather interesting chat… I have only ever tasted doubles once, perhaps it is time to go and try some……

  3. I have never really had the need to use SKYPE. I usually use other means of communications, eg. e-mails, cell phones, etc. However, now that I have started to use it, I see how useful it can be. For example, if you were not at the chat at the same time, or if you joined later, you could have seen exactly what was said by the participants.

  4. I am hoping that we can use Skype as a group for a more scholarly activity the next time :-)

  5. The skype meeting was very entertaining. It is sad you did not get to join us Dr. D. But that attempt was a clear example of how quickly users/students can become side tracked.Shari

  6. Skype has many advantages and few disadvantages.

Skype requires your computer to be turned on and the software up and running in order to make calls. This is a huge disadvantage, as it prevents you from making and receiving calls when your computer is off

Limited options exist for individuals who would like to use a typical land-line telephone with the Skype software other than a corded USB phone

Skype subscribers who are having difficulty using the service have limited options for getting in touch with Skype customer service

  7. Although I've had Skype for almost a year, I hardly use it. Hence, although I was signed in for hours I wouldn't have known how to find the others who were messaging in the meantime. I see its uses for teaching/learning especially with my postgraduate students who work and have varying personal and professional schedules. I've already let them know that Skype is another option besides our face-to-face meetings.

  8. I took advantage of Dr D's offer to have an extra skype session on the 21st and 22nd to discuss storyboarding problems. I must say I felt a little more comfortable with storyboarding after the chat sessions... Skype is certainly a useful tool that I may consider with some of my small group teaching sessions...Sacha
